The Battle of Uhud is one of the battles that teaches us many lessons, among which greed can only lead to our destruction.

The battle of Uhud was one of the biggest battles that due to its many lessons were mentioned in the holy Quran more than once. Allah says in the holy Quran:

“Allah did indeed fulfill His promise to you when you, with His permission, were about to annihilate your enemy, until you flinched and fell to disputing about the order, and disobeyed it after He brought you in sight (of the booty) which you covet. Among you are some that hanker after this world and some that desire the Hereafter. Then did He divert you from your foes in order to test you? But He forgave you, For Allah is full of grace to those who believe.” (Al-Imran 3:152)

During the battle of Uhud prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was greatly injured, why? And what happened during that battle? Let’s find out.

What happened in the battle of Uhud?

One of the conquests of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was the battle of Uhud. It was the second battle in the history of Islam, it happened after the battle of Badr. In the battle of Badr the Muslim Army consisted only of 300 soldiers and the army of Quraish were of 1000 soldiers. Even though they were outnumbered they won the battle with the help of Allah Almighty and his angels.

What was the main cause of the Battle of Uhud? The Muslim victory in the battle of Badr made the disbelievers angry, and they wanted venges, therefore they gathered 3000 soldiers and headed to fight the believers and awaited the Muslims near the mount of Uhud.

The Muslim Army consisted of only 1,000 soldiers, and 300 of them retreated before heading to the battle leaving only 700 soldiers to fight 3,000 soldiers.

At the beginning of the battle of Uhud the Muslim army was winning the battle and the Quraish Army retreated. That’s when greed took over the Muslim army and the archers left their spots to collect the spoils of war, even though the prophet ordered them not to leave their position and they were ordered to do so.

The prophet’s orders were clear, the archers should not leave their positions for any reason, or else the Quraish Army would attack from the sides or rear, but they chose to disobey the orders and left their positions. Which gave a great opportunity for the army of Quraish to attack.

Unfortunately, the Quraish Army surrounded them from all directions and attacked them causing many losses, and many Muslims lost their lives, while the rest fled for their lives leaving the prophet and the companions under attack. The prophet tried to gather them and to encourage them to stand their ground and fight but they didn’t listen.

However, the archer regiment left their position to go after the belongings that the disbelievers left behind. This was when everything fell apart, the Quraish army took the opportunity and attacked the Muslims, gaining the upper hand and causing many losses to the Muslim army. The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was greatly injured.

Allah said in the holy Quran about the battle of Uhud:

We will cast horror into the hearts of the disbelievers for associating ˹false gods˺ with Allah—a practice He has never authorized. The Fire will be their home—what an evil place for the wrongdoers to stay!

Indeed, Allah fulfilled His promise to you when you initially swept them away by His Will, then your courage weakened and you disputed the command and disobeyed after Allah had brought victory within your reach. Some of you were after worldly gain while others desired a heavenly reward. He denied you victory over them as a test, yet He has pardoned you. And Allah is Gracious to the believers.

˹Remember˺ when you were running far away ˹in panic˺—not looking at anyone—while the Messenger was calling to you from behind! So, Allah rewarded your disobedience with distress upon distress. Now, do not grieve over the victory you were denied or the injury you suffered. And Allah is all- aware of what you do.

Then after distress, He sent down serenity in the form of drowsiness overcoming some of you, while others were disturbed by evil thoughts about Allah—the thoughts of ˹pre-Islamic˺ ignorance. They ask, “Do we have a say in the matter?” Say, ˹O Prophet, ˺ “All matters are destined by Allah.” They conceal in their hearts what they do not reveal to you. They say to themselves, “If we had any say in the matter, none of us would have come to die here.” Say, ˹O Prophet, ˺ “Even if you were to remain in your homes, those among you who were destined to be killed would have met the same fate.” Through this, Allah tests what is within you and purifies what is in your heart. And Allah knows best what is ˹hidden˺ in the heart.

Indeed, those ˹believers˺ who fled on the day when the two armies met were made to slip by Satan because of their misdeeds. But Allah has pardoned them. Surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Forbearing.” [surah Al-Imran 152:155]

Why did the Muslims not win the battle of Uhud?

When the Muslim archers left their positions to collect the war spoils, it gave a great opportunity for the Quraysh army to attack and surround the Muslim army from all directions. Many Muslims lost their lives, and others fled for their lives leaving prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his close friends behind.

Fortunately, the leader of the Quraysh army chooses to go back to Mecca instead of attacking the injured ones.

Who won the battle of Uhud and why?

Who won the battle of Uhud? The Quraysh Army won the battle of Uhud, the army was led by Khalid ibn al-Walid, who took advantage of what happened during the battle. When the Muslim archers left their positions, he used that against the Muslim army and attacked them from all directions.

In which surah is the battle of Uhud mentioned?

The battle of Uhud is one of the battles that was mentioned in the holy Quran due to its importance and many lessons we learn from it. In which surah is the battle of Uhud mentioned? it is mentioned in surah Al-Imran. Here are the verses about the battle:

We will cast horror into the hearts of the disbelievers for associating ˹false gods˺ with Allah—a practice He has never authorized. The Fire will be their home—what an evil place for the wrongdoers to stay!

Indeed, Allah fulfilled His promise to you when you initially swept them away by His Will, then your courage weakened and you disputed the command and disobeyed after Allah had brought victory within your reach. Some of you were after worldly gain while others desired a heavenly reward. He denied you victory over them as a test, yet He has pardoned you. And Allah is Gracious to the believers.
