The Different Forms of Islam Donation
A survey of giving habits by religion in the UK shows that donations from Muslims are the highest (1) (2). Islam donation has many forms. However, there are two main and broad categories: one obligatory and the other voluntary. Let’s take a look at both
Zakat: The Obligatory Islam Donation.
Zakat is the third pillar of Islam and is mandatory for every financially stable Muslim. Islam donation in the form of Zakat requires eligible Muslims to donate a specific part of their wealth, typically 2.5% of their savings, to those in need. To be more specific, one’s wealth must be more than a threshold figure, called the “nisab.” This is usually calculated either by gold or silver or by its equal in cash. This process involves assessing savings, investments, and other assets over a lunar year. Then calculate based on what is above and beyond our own basic needs.
Zakah comes from the Arabic verb zaka, meaning “to thrive,” “to be wholesome,” and “to be pure.” Thus, Zakah means purification, as it purifies one’s wealth and heart (we will get to that later).
Since it is an obligatory Islam donation, Zakat has many rules besides its percentage. For example, to whom should we give Zakat?
Who is eligible for Islam Donation (Zakat)?
Alms-tax is only for the poor and the needy, for those employed to administer it, for those whose hearts are attracted ˹to the faith˺, for ˹freeing˺ slaves, for those in debt, for Allah’s cause, and for ˹needy˺ travellers. ˹This is˺ an obligation from Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise. (Surah At-Tawbah – 60)
The Quran specifies eight categories of people who are eligible for Zakat:
- The poor (Al-Fuqara)
- The needy (Al-Masakin)
- Those employed to collect or distribute (administrate) Zakat (Al-Amilina ‘Alaiha)
- Those whose hearts need softening toward Islam, such as new converts to Islam and those who are inclined towards entering the faith. (Al-Muallafatu Qulubuhum)
- To free captives or slaves (Ar-Riqab), this can also be wrongfully imprisoned people.
- Those in debt (Al-Gharimin)
- For Allah’s sake (Fi Sabilillah)
- Travelers in need (Ibn As-Sabil)
You see, Islam donation is not about religion, race, or nationality; it’s about the circumstances and true need.
Sadaqah: The Voluntary Islam Donation
Sadaqah, on the other hand, is a voluntary act of Islam donation. You can give it at any time and in any amount, whether in the form of money, food, clothes, or even a kind gesture or good deed.
Just as mentioned in Hadith:
“Your smile for your brother is charity. Your removal of stones, thorns or bones from the paths of people is charity. Your guidance of a person who is lost is a charity.” (Bukhari)
The Prophet (peace be upon him) would give charity all year. But he increased his sadaqah during Ramadan. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said,
“The Prophet (peace be upon him) was the most generous of people, and he was most generous during Ramadan” (Bukhari).
Sadaqah is the true spirit of generosity and compassion in Islam. This Islamic donation encourages Muslims to support others out of goodwill and empathy. Another hadith shows us how important even every part of a person’s body is in giving sadaqah
“A charity is due for every joint in each person on every day the sun comes up: to act justly between two people is a charity; to help a man with his mount, lifting him onto it or hoisting up his belongings onto it, is a charity; a good word is a charity; and removing a harmful thing from the road is a charity.” (Al-Bukhari, Muslim)
You see, Islam donation as sadaqah can be done in many ways.
- Giving money to the poor
- Give money to charitable organizations or projects
- Contributing to mosques and schools
- Doing an act of kindness
- Helping others in need
- Offering a kind word
- Providing food and shelter to the homeless
- Volunteering time for a good cause.
- Sharing knowledge or beneficial information.
- Teaching others
- Providing guidance
- Supporting educational and healthcare initiatives
Even helping family members is a form of Islam donation and sadaqah
The Prophet said:
“To give something to a poor man brings one reward, while giving the same to a needy relation brings two: one for charity and the other for respecting family ties.” (Al-Tirmidhi)
Basically, all good deeds are forms of Sadqah or Islam donate.
Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah: The Prophet ﷺ said:
Enjoining, all that is good is a Sadaqa”. al-Bukhari 6021
There is also a special form of Islam donation, which is a charity that keeps giving (Sadaqah Jariyah). It’s also known as Preptual Charity. This is a continuous or ongoing form of Islamic donation. It includes actions with a lasting positive impact. This means they continue benefiting people after they are first done, such as:
- Digging a well
- Building a school
- Planting trees
So as long as this form of Islam donation continues to benefit others, the person will continue to collect rewards, even after they are gone.
The Prophet said:
“When a person dies, his works end, except for three: ongoing charity, a knowledge that is benefited from, and a righteous child who prays for him.” (Muslim, Al-Tirmidhi, others)
Other forms of Islam donation
Muslims also make donations as Kaffara (giving when they break an oath) and Waqf (donating to build infrastructure to help those in need). Other forms of Islam donation are hibah (Gifts) and Wisyah (wills).
Reflecting on all of this, we see that Islam gives us so many ways to donate and give back to society and those in need. It enforces compassion and encourages good deeds.
Now that we know the different types of Islamic donations, let’s dig deeper into their benefits and rewards. Keep reading
The benefits and rewards of Islamic Donation
Besides Zakat being a pillar of Islam, Islam donation, in general, has many benefits and rewards that we as Muslims should always seek.
Let’s explore the numerous spiritual, social, and personal benefits of Islam donation.
Islam Donation is an Act of Worship
Zakat is an obligatory Islam donation, from Zakat al-Mal to Zakat al-Fitr. This act of giving is not only a charitable deed but also a religious duty. Allah SWT frequently pairs zakat with prayer (salah) in the Quran, emphasizing its importance as an act of worship.
For example:
“And establish prayer and give zakat, and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience].”
Surah Al-Baqarah (2:43)
Furthermore, donation in Islam is a way to repent and ask for forgiveness for our sins
Do they not know that Allah alone accepts the repentance of His servants and receives ˹their˺ charity and that Allah alone is the Accepter of Repentance, Most Merciful? Surah At-Tawbah – 104
Allah also warns against the hoarding of wealth and the refusal to pay zakat. Those who do that will face severe consequences and painful punishment.
“Those who hoard gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah—give them tidings of a painful punishment. On the Day when it will be heated in the fire of Hell and seared therewith will be their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, [it will be said], ‘This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard.” Surah At-Tawbah (9:34-35)
Islam Donation is a source of many blessings
Allah rewards those who obey his commands and worship him. This, of course, includes performing Islam donations. Those who spend their wealth for the sake of Allah and help others will be rewarded immensely, in both donia (life) and Akhira (afterlife). This is emphasized in many Quran verses
“The example of those who spend their wealth in the cause of Allah is that of a grain that sprouts into seven ears, each bearing one hundred grains. And Allah multiplies ˹the reward even more˺ to whoever He wills. For Allah is All-Bountiful, All-Knowing. Qur’an, 2:261
Those who spend their wealth [in Allah ‘s way] by night and by day, secretly and publicly – they will have their reward with their Lord. And no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve. 2:274
It was also emphasized in many Hadiths. Sa’d ibn Abu Waqqas narrated that Allah’s Messenger (s.a.w.s.) said:
“…whatever you spend (for Allah’s sake), you will be rewarded for it, even for a morsel of food which you may put in the mouth of your wife.” (Bukhari, Vol. 8, Hadith 725; Vol.1, Hadith 53)
“If one gives in charity what equals (the size of) one date-fruit from the honestly-earned money and Allah accepts only the honestly earned money –Allah takes it in His right (hand) and then enlarges its reward for that person (who has given it), as anyone of you brings up his baby horse, so much so that it becomes as big as a mountain.” (Sahih Bukhari, Vol 2, Book 24, No. 491)
Imagine you are making your Islam donation a Sadqah Jaryah. It will be a huge source of multiplying rewards as long as you live and even after you die!
What’s more, Islam donation will increase your wealth.
“One who pays Zakat, Allah will make their wealth increase” (Bukhari)
“Charity does not in any way decrease the wealth and the servant who forgives, Allah adds to his respect; and the one who shows humility, Allah elevates him in the estimation (of the people).” (Muslim)
Furthermore, charity and Islam donations will be a source of protection for us on the day of judgment. The Prophet said:
“The believer’s shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity.” (Al-Tirmidhi)
Islam donation protects us From Calamity
Not only will it protect us on the Day of Judgment but also in our lives. By sacrificing part of one’s wealth and giving it to charity, we are protected from tragedy and misfortune.
The Prophet said:
“Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” (Al-Tirmidhi)
Islam donations help the less fortunate and strengthen community bonds
Islam donation helps the less fortunate and poor. Everywhere we look, many people are without food, clean water, shelter, or clothing. Islam donations help these people and ease their suffering.
This helps foster a sense of community and solidarity among Muslims. Islam recognizes the importance of peace and care among one another. After all, we are all Ummah (one Nation). Therefore, our religion emphasizes brotherhood and always being there for one another. Just like the prophet taught us in his last sermon and many hadiths, for example:
“You will not believe until you love for your brother what you love for yourself.” “
“The believers are like one body in their mutual love and affection: if one limb is injured, the rest responds with sleeplessness and fever.”
Islam donation promotes social justice.
Allah has blessed some people with more wealth than others. Islam donations keep us connected despite those differences. It promotes social justice by addressing economic inequalities. Doing good things for others without asking for anything in return, strengthens our connection.
The Qur’an reminds us that we have an obligation towards the needy and those deprived
and who give the rightful share of their wealth. to the beggar and the poor.” Surah Al-Ma’arij, 24–25
It’s not just about giving money. When you show mercy and empathy for people in debt, for example, give the debtor more time to pay back or even cancel out the person’s debt. This is a form of charity, as you are saving someone from a struggle because of debt, and it is highly encouraged.
The Prophet said:
“If anyone would like Allah to save him from the hardships of the Day of Resurrection, he should give more time to his debtor who is short of money, or remit his debt altogether.” (Muslim)
What’s more, when we make Islam donation, we contribute to the fair distribution of resources within the community. Moreover, Ensures money circulates within the economy.
Islam Donation purifies the wealth and heart
You may think that giving away some of your money will decrease your wealth. Yet, when it comes to Islam donation, the opposite is true! Isalm donation purifies wealth and heart! It fosters a sense of detachment from material possessions. Thus, it cleanses the soul from greed and envy as well.
“Take from their wealth ˹O Prophet˺ charity to purify and bless them, and pray for them—surely your prayer is a source of comfort for them. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. “Surah At-Tawbah – 103
Moreover, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the significance of Sadaqah. He stated,
“Charity does not decrease wealth. No one forgives another except that Allah increases his honor. And no one humbles himself for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises his status” (Muslim).
Islam donation makes us better Muslims.
Imagine you are doing your obligatory act of worship, knowing in your heart that you are obeying Allah. Moreover, you are helping those in need and doing good deeds. How content and satisfied would you feel?
Islam donation strengthens good qualities such as generosity, gratitude, and empathy. also gives a sense of purpose, which is important for inner peace. This ultimately leads to greater happiness and contentment.
It also makes people respect and admire you for being the good person you are.
To sum it all up, not only does Islamic donation have an impact on those in need but also on the donor himself. It is an act of worship that purifies our money and hearts. It’s not only about money! It establishes compassion, empathy, and social justice. Now I bet you are ready to make those donations. However, there are a few more things to remember. Keep reading!
The Rules for Islam Donation
When it comes to Islam donation, there are a few things to do to make sure we’re doing it right.
1. Both Donor and Recipient of Islam Donation should be eligible
First and foremost, we, as donors, must be eligible to make Islam donations. Meaning that we must be adults with both physical and financial stability.
Secondly, whether it is zakat or sadaqah, we must make sure that those who receive Islam donations are also eligible.
2. What to give and its source in Islam donation
When it comes to Islam donation, it’s best to donate things you love; whether it is food, money, effort, or time.
“Never will you attain the good [reward] until you spend [in the way of Allah ] from that which you love. And whatever you spend – indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.” [Quran 3:92]
However, giving donations in Islam should not cause harm or hardship. This means you should first have enough for yourself and your family as well.
Abu Umamah (r.a.) narrated that Allah’s Messenger said:
“O son of Adam, it is better for you if you spend your surplus (wealth), but if you withhold it, it is evil for you. There is (however) no reproach for you (if you withhold means necessary) for a living. And begin (charity) with your dependents; and the upper hand is better than the lower hand.” (Muslim, 2256)
Furthermore, Islam donation should be from a good, lawful (Halal) source. It is no brainer that what we do as a good deed should always come from good sources.
O believers! Donate from the best of what you have earned and of what We have produced for you from the earth. Do not pick out worthless things for donation, which you yourselves would only accept with closed eyes. And know that Allah is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.” Surah Al-Baqarah – 267
3. Intention of making Islam donation
One crucial thing in Islam donation is our intention (Nehya). It must be good and pure only for the sake of Allah, without waiting for or expecting anything in return.
“Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification, and have in their minds no favor from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, but only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Creator Most High; and soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction.” (Qur’an, 92:18-21)
“Spend in charity and do not keep count for then Allah will also keep count in giving you provision.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
4. What to do after making Islam donation
Moreover, we mustn’t follow our Islam donation with hurt or injury (humiliation for the recipients of this donation.) And never to do it to show off (Riya) or gain praise or recognition in any way.
“O you who believe! Do not render vain your charity by reminders of your generosity or by injury, like him who spends his wealth to be seen of men and he does not believe in Allah nor in the last Day.” (Qur’an, 2: 264)
Furthermore, it is better to conceal our Islam donation than to boast or brag about it.
To give charity publicly is good, but to give to the poor privately is better for you, and will absolve you of your sins. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do.1 (Qur’an, 2 271)
The bottom line.
To get the best rewards for your Islam donation, you must make sure your intention is pure and only for the sake of Allah. Give what you cherish and love, and don’t wait for anything in return. Make sure your Islam donation goes to those truly in need.
Now that we know the rules of Islam donation, the final question is, how do we do it, and how can we do it in our modern world? Let’s find out.
How to Practice Islam Donation
If you’re considering an Islam donation, the first thing you should ask yourself is: have I given my Zakat yet? It only seems logical to start with the obligatory form of Islam donation right?
“Giving Zakat is more beloved to Allah than giving in charity during the entire year” (Bukhari)
If you have done that and are ready to make more Islam donations, it’s better to do it as soon as you can without negligence.
And spend [in the way of Allah] from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you, and he says, “My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term, so I would give charity and be among the righteous.” (Surah Al-Munafiqun – 10)
Haritha ibn Wahb narrated that he heard the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) saying,
“O people! Give in charity, as a time will come upon you when a person will wander about with his object of charity and will not find anybody to accept it, and anyone (who will be requested to take it) will say, “If you had brought it yesterday, I would have taken it, but today I am not in need of it.” (Bukhari Vol. 2, Hadith 492)
Abu Hurairah (r.a.) narrated that a man came to the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) and asked, “O Allah’s Messenger which charity is the most superior in reward?” He replied, “The charity which you practice while you are healthy, niggardly and afraid of poverty and wish to become wealthy. Do not delay it to the time of approaching death and then say, ‘Give so much to such and such, and so much to such and such.’ (And it has already belonged to such and such (his heirs).” (Bukhari Vol. 2, Hadith 500)
“Do not show lethargy or negligence in giving alms and charity till your last breath.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
All these hadiths tell us something. Life is short and temporary. Thus, let us hasten to give sadaqah to earn the rewards, and heaven for the hereafter is everlasting.
So how can we make Islam donation in our modern world, and can we use technology to make things easier? Keep reading to find out!
