It is so difficult to wake up at night to pray, therefore, waking up for Fajr prayer is a way of strengthening our faith and a way of encouraging us to come closer to Allah.

Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

لَيْسَ صَلَاةٌ أَثْقَلَ عَلَى المُنَافِقِينَ مِنَ الفَجْرِ وَالعِشَاء

“No prayer is heavier upon the Munaafiqiin (hypocrites) than the Fajr and the `Isha’ prayers.”

A source of light on the Day of Resurrection.

Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Give good tidings to those who regularly walk to the mosques in darkness for having a perfect light on the Day of Judgment.”

The Quran of the Fajr is witnessed.

Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran: “Establish prayer at the decline of the sun [from its meridian] until the darkness of the night and [also] the Quran of dawn. Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed” (Quran, 17:78).

Fajr prayer is witnessed.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Angels come to you in succession by night and day, and they meet at Fajr and Asr prayer. Then those who spent the night among you ascend, and He (Allah) will ask them, although He knows best: ‘In what condition did you leave My slaves?’ They will say: ‘We left them when they were praying and we came to them when they were praying.” (Bukhari)

Many rewards.

Praying Fajr prayer and its sunnah brings us many rewards in this life and in the afterlife.

Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Two Rakat of prayer before the Fajr (Fardh) prayer are better than the world and whatever is in it.” (Muslim)

How many rakat of fajr prayer?

There are two Rakat in Fajr prayer, and to earn more rewards it is better to bray the Fajr Sunnah which is to rakat before praying the Fajr prayer. Our beloved prophet encouraged us to pray the sunnah of Fajr for its many virtues and benefits for us.

Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Two Rakahs of prayer before the Fajr (Fardh) prayer are better than the world and whatever is in it.” (Muslim)

Here are Quran verses about fajr prayer, and prayer in general:

أَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ لِدُلُوكِ ٱلشَّمْسِ إِلَىٰ غَسَقِ ٱلَّيْلِ وَقُرْءَانَ ٱلْفَجْرِ ۖ إِنَّ قُرْءَانَ ٱلْفَجْرِ كَانَ مَشْهُودًۭا ٧٨

Observe the prayer from the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night and the dawn prayer, for certainly the dawn prayer is witnessed ˹by angels˺. [Surah Al-Fajr, 78]

Allah says, ” ‘It is truly I. I am Allah! There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Me. So worship Me ˹alone˺, and establish prayer for My remembrance”. (Qur’an, 20:14)

Can you pray fajr after sunrise?

Yes, you can pray Fajr prayer after sunrise, as our beloved prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whomsoever forgets [to perform] a prayer or missed it due to sleep, its expiation is that he should perform it whenever he remembers”. (Hadith reported by both Bukharῑ and Muslim)

Now, another question pops up in your head, how to pray fajr prayer when its due time is over? You will pray it normally, offer two Rakat of Fajr sunnah then pray the fajr.

Abu Qatādah reported that “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was on a journey. He said to his companions, ‘Watch the time for our prayer, i.e. the Fajr prayer’. But sleep dominated them all, and they were awakened only with the heat of the sun. So, they did their ablution. Bilal then called for the prayer and they offered two Sunnah rakaht of Fajr and then offered the Fajr prayer and mounted their animals. Some of them said to others, ‘We showed negligence in our prayers’. The Prophet said, ‘There is no negligence in sleep. The negligence can only be when you are awake. If any of you misses a prayer, he should offer it when he remembers it'”. (Reported by Abu Dawoud)

What does the Prophet say about Fajr prayer?

There is more than one hadith about Fajr prayer and its importance. As our beloved prophet instructed and encouraged us to pray it in his hadiths.

Jundub ibn ‘Abd-Allah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever prays Fajr is under the protection of Allah, so do not fall short with regard to the rights of Allah, for anyone who does that, Allah will seize him and will throw him on his face into the Fire of Hell.” [Muslim (657)]

Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Two Rakahs of prayer before the Fajr (Fardh) prayer are better than the world and whatever is in it.” (Muslim)

Also, Allah mentions the importance of Fajr prayer in the Quran and says: “Establish prayer at the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night and recite the Qur’an at Fajr. Indeed, the recitation of Fajr is ever witnessed.” (Surah bani Israeel verse 78)

Additionally, the prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mentioned the benefits of praying fajr in the mosque and congregation and said: ‘A prayer performed in congregation is twenty-five times more superior in reward to a prayer performed by a single person. The Angels of the night and the Angels of the day are assembled at the time of the Fajr (Morning) prayer.” (Bukhari Vol. 6, Book 60, Hadith 241)

It is also narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Shaytan ties three knots at the back of your head when you sleep, and he seals the place of each knot with ‘You have a long night ahead, so sleep.’ If you wake up and remember Allah, a knot is untied. If you do wudu, a knot is untied. If you pray, a knot is untied, and morning finds you lively and in good spirits, and if not, morning finds you in bad spirits and lazy.” (Muwatta Book 9, Hadith 98)

“Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyana ba’da ma amatana, wa ilaihin-nushur (All praise is due to Allah, Who has brought us back to life after He has caused us to die, and to Him is the return).”

Also, whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) laid down for sleep at night, he would place his (right) hand under his (right) cheek and supplicate: “Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya [O Allah, with Your Name will I die and live (wake up)].” And when he woke up, he would supplicate: “Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyana ba’da ma amatana, wa ilaihin-nushur (All praise is due to Allah, Who has brought us back to life after He has caused us to die, and to Him is the return).” (Riyad us-Salihin)
